The constraint

A classical brick house set among mature pines. The client wanted shade, privacy and somewhere to sit by a fire without losing a single tree.

The decision

The front is kept formal: two hedges and a sett path to the door. Behind the house the garden loosens: a curtained pergola off the terrace, a gravel court with a fire pit, and a stepping path that curves between the trunks instead of cutting through them.

The detail

Hedges are set back from the trunks so the pines keep their root zone, and the fire court sits on gravel for the same reason: no excavation under the canopy.
