The Studio

Design, grounded in years of building

“A garden should be drawn like a building and built like one, to be more beautiful in twenty years than on the day it is finished.”

Atelier Verte is an American atelier, founded in New York and schooled in Europe. Behind it are more than ten years of landscape work our team delivered before the atelier existed: private estates, residential communities and gardens built from the ground up, in climates with the same freeze-thaw winters as this one. Today we are based in New York and design gardens across the United States. The city, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey are home ground and where we work most often; for a project anywhere else, the drawings travel.

Earthworks and drainage. Stone walls and paving. Irrigation, lighting, planting, lawns. We have built all of it, for years, and that is the whole point: a drawing is only as good as the hands that know what it costs to build. That experience is what you commission when you ask us to design a garden, whoever ends up putting it in the ground.

We treat a garden the way a good practice treats a building: measured, detailed, documented, then executed by people who care about the second decade rather than the first summer. Most of what goes wrong in a landscape goes wrong underground, before anything looks like a garden at all.

An American studio, working in an old-world vocabulary.

The Company We Keep

Landscapes for architecture of the first rank

Our team has worked directly with some of the defining architects of our time, joining their project teams as the landscape counterpart and holding the site to the same standard as the building.

Zaha Hadid Architects
MVRDV
MASA · Hiroki Matsuura
and studios across Europe

Project details and references from that work are shared on request, with their owners' consent.

How the atelier works

01

Design leads

Nothing is ordered, dug or laid before it is drawn, priced and approved. Our drawings are detailed enough that every bid prices the same garden, and change orders have nowhere to hide.

02

Built knowledge behind the pencil

Our team spent more than ten years building what we now draw, so the details survive: they are specified by people who have laid the stone, not only named it. If you would like us to coordinate the build or care for the garden afterwards, that is quoted separately, never required.

03

Architects are partners

We join project teams as the landscape counterpart to architecture and interior design studios, one design language across house, interior and grounds.

04

Discretion is house law

Your property, your name and your plans are never published, shown or discussed without your written consent. We sign non-disclosure agreements as a matter of course, and some of our best gardens will never appear in any portfolio. That is exactly as it should be.

05

Materials without borders

A supplier network built over more than ten years and spanning three continents: stone from named quarries, specimen plants from dedicated growers, lighting, furniture and interior pieces from ateliers we know personally. Trade terms are passed through to the project, which is how the most premium materials stay inside a sane budget.

06

Several minds on every garden

No project here is handed to one designer and a template. A small international team works on each garden, with different schools, climates and eyes behind the drawings, and proposals are debated inside the studio before you see them. What you receive is the version that survived the argument, and it belongs to your property alone. Uniqueness is in the details, and the details are where we spend our time.
